On Friday May 22nd, LA's City Forest Officer, Rachel Malarich, staff from the Department of Public Works, Streets LA and tree experts met online to envision a sustainable future for LA's urban forest. Mayor Eric Garcetti provided recorded opening remarks reflecting how maintaining and expanding our urban forest remains a core value for the City, even in this challenging fiscal environment. Rachel Malarich opened the event, remarking about the role of trees in a changing city and climate and the leadership of Mayor Garcetti in recognizing the importance of the urban forest in combatting the effects of climate change. Guest speakers included Dr. Tom Smiley, who spoke on reducing conflicts between sidewalks and trees; Miranda Hutton, who spoke about advancing social and ecological resilience; and Dr. Matt Ritter, who covered tree selection in the era of climate chaos and decreasing diversity.
