America Recycles Day, an initiative of Keep America Beautiful and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recognizes the importance and benefits of recycling, including reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and conserving natural resources such as timber, water and minerals. Like most celebrations in 2020, America Recycles Day, on November 15th, looked a little different this year. While in-person events are still off the agenda, LA Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) knows that recycling awareness is more important than ever. As we spend more time at home during the pandemic, we are generating more waste - up to 30% more in some areas.
Board of Public Works President Greg Good provided accolades for the men and women of LASAN who have kept our trash and recycling service moving under difficult circumstances. "On America Recycles Day, we recognize not only the importance of recycling and reuse to our climate, but also the hard working men and women of LA Sanitation and Environment who have maintained our programs through this unprecedented time," said President Good. "These front line and essential workers are unsung heroes of the environment and this pandemic."
"Our teams have been working on the front lines throughout the pandemic, picking up additional trash and recycling from homes at no extra cost to residents," said Enrique C. Zaldivar, Director and General Manager of LASAN. "After years of seeing ingrained recycling behavior evident in Los Angeles, LASAN worked to make sure Angelenos didn't lose their recycling momentum. We have provided uninterrupted service, despite the challenges presented by the pandemic."
